Liberty Double Eagles
1890-CC $20 MS62 PCGS. Variety 1-A. The 1890-CC is a notable "demand rarity" in the Liberty Head double eagle series as well as a conditionally rare issue in Select Uncirculated or finer grades. It is quite scarce at the MS62 level as well. Abrasions are the main grade-limiting factor, although the present coin shows fewer and less-severe marks than normally associated with its assigned grade.
The colorful toning and lustrous eye appeal set this coin apart from its peers. Reddish highlights and lilac accents enrich the orange-gold patina. A crisp strike lacks full details only on the highest hair strands, while the right tailfeathers are incomplete from die lapping. Moreover, the vibrant visual impression and quality surfaces make this example an ideal alternative to the much rarer and expensive coins graded just one point higher. Population: 68 in 62 (4 in 62+), 8 finer (4/17).
