Liberty Double Eagles
1893-CC $20 MS61 NGC. Variety 1-A. Only 18,402 Liberty double eagles were struck at the Carson City Mint in 1893, the last year of coinage operations at the famous Western facility. Surprisingly, the 1893-CC is much more available in high grade than its nominal production total would suggest. A substantial number of pieces have been repatriated from European holdings in recent times. Although the 1893-CC is still a scarce issue in higher Mint State grades, its status as the final Carson City double eagle makes it especially popular with branch mint type collectors.
The present coin exhibits sharply detailed central design elements, with the slightest softness on some peripheral devices. From an early state of the dies, this piece does not show the usual die cracks through the bottom of the date and the letters TAT in STATES. The orange-gold surfaces radiate vibrant mint luster and are lightly marked for the grade.
