Proof High Relief Double Eagles
1907 $20 High Relief PR62 NGC. No official records have surfaced to confirm the striking of High Relief Saint-Gaudens double eagles in proof format, but many students of the series believe a limited number of proofs were struck, and NGC certifies coins struck from one specific die-collar combination as proof strikings. The most easily recognized feature of the proof coins is the edge lettering, which was applied by the same collar that was used to strike the famous Ultra High Relief double eagles.
This impressive PR62 specimen shows the expected sharpness of detail on the design elements, and the lightly marked orange-gold surfaces show a number of swirling die polish lines in the fields. There is a die line through the base of the dome on the Capitol building. The coin has a pronounced fin, or Wire Rim, around the edges and shows some recutting on the B in PLURIBUS. All these features are diagnostic of the NGC proofs. Pleasing matte luster adds to the considerable eye appeal.
