Territorial Gold
1850 $5 Mormon Five Dollar -- Edge Damaged -- PCGS Genuine. AU Details. K-5, High R.5. Mormon veterans of the Mexican War, as well as settlers, artisans, and converts faced hard times after the long journey westward. The gold fields of California beckoned, and those that were successful gathered a small fortune in gold before returning to the Great Salt Lake Valley, which was settled by the Mormons in 1847. Coinage operations were established there in 1849. Soldiers who received their pay in gold added to the bullion pool for the Mormon mint.
The simplistic design for this Mormon five dollar gold piece incorporates traditional Mormon symbols (as do all of the Mormon denominations), with a crowned eye and clasped hands on the five dollar pieces. The coins produced were substandard in terms of their gold value, which mattered little to the coinage circulating among the Mormon community. Those coins that circulated more widely were subject to scrutiny. The edge damage on this example may indeed be test cuts for those testing the coin for fineness. The smooth surfaces display greenish-gold color and only a few small marks. Because many Mormon coins were melted, the supply for today's collectors is limited and this Genuine piece is sure to attract much attention from bidders.
