Patterns
1849 P3CS Three Cent Silver, Judd-113 Original, Pollock-127, High R.7 PR64 PCGS. Popularly known as the "Ugly Duckling," this pattern combines the Arabic and Roman numerals 3 and III, one on each side, with no other legends, date, denomination, or other device. Not only is this a "coin without a country," it states a quantity with no units. Struck in a "silver-copper alloy of unknown proportions," according to Judd, with a plain edge. Saul Teichman believes these pieces are more than likely standard coin silver, rather than 50% silver / 50% copper as seen on Judd-111, or 60% silver / 40% copper as seen on Judd-112. Restrikes apparently exist, and were struck later than 1849. This is an original. The fields show remarkably deep reflectivity for such a richly toned coin. Each side displays cobalt-blue toning with lighter accents scattered about.
