Seated Half Dollars
1851-O 50C WB-101, Die Pair 1, R.4, MS64 PCGS. The story of the 1851-O half is much the same as that for the other pre-1853 silver coins: The influx of gold from California drove the price of silver coins above face value. The result is many thousands were melted. Only five die combinations are known for this issue. This die pairing is recognizable by the unfinished area below the olive leaves, a tiny tine under the eagle's left (facing) wing, and several die lines within the lines of the lower portion of the shield. This is a richly lustrous coin. Much of the original mint brilliance remains, but significant areas on each side are also covered with speckled russet patina. Sharply struck throughout. For all 1851-O varieties. Population: 17 in 64, 5 finer (4/17).
