Proof Seated Dollars
1861 $1 PR61 NGC. OC-P1, High R.3. The 1861 issue shows a deceptively high mintage of proofs. Mint records show that 1,000 proofs were struck, but we suspect many pieces were melted at year's end as unsold. Microscopic swirling lines on the present coin have dulled the proof flash in the fields, but the devices display pinpoint striking definition and the surfaces are otherwise mark-free. Light silver-gray patina with glints of gold evenly covers each side. Census: 7 in 61, 77 finer (4/17).
