1861 P50C Half Dollar, Judd-280, Pollock-331, Low R.7, PR64 Brown PCGS. A regular dies obverse is paired with a reverse the same as the regular issue, except that the motto GOD OUR TRUST is set directly onto the upper field. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. This motto variation is a precursor to the familiar IN GOD WE TRUST and is referred to in an undated letter from James Longacre where he laid out the logistics for the motto on various denominations and the "appropriateness of a motto expressive of National reliance upon Divine support ... " This is a richly toned example with significant mirroring in the fields with layers of bluish-yellow patina over each side and occasional glimpses of original red on the reverse.
