Patterns
1868 1C One Cent, Judd-605, Pollock-670, R.5, PR66 PCGS. The design closely resembles the contemporary three cent nickel, but only a single pillar represents the denomination within the laurel wreath. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. This design was struck in nickel, copper, and aluminum. The nickel impressions are by far the most frequently encountered (in aluminum it is unique). The planchet for this piece shows differing degrees of preparation in the Mint. The obverse is bright with nicely reflective fields, while the reverse is less polished with horizontal streaks of granularity across that side. An untoned example.
