Patterns
1879 $1 Metric Dollar, Judd-1617, Pollock-1813, R.4, PR62 NGC. William Barber's Metric dollar with Liberty wearing a coronet with a border of pearls, similar in design to the half union patterns from 1877. The reverse is elaborately laid out with a partial wreath of cotton and corn tied at the base, a ribbon, and with DEO EST GLORIA on a tablet above. Struck in goloid or silver with a reeded edge. Also struck in copper, aluminum, and two unique pieces in white metal and lead. Like many goloid patterns, most examples have not undergone metallurgical testing to determine if they really are goloid or regular coin silver planchets. In spite of numerous small contact marks and planchet flakes on each side, the fields still show deep mirroring. Brilliant.
