Patterns
1879 $1 Metric Dollar, Judd-1618, Pollock-1813, R.5, PR58 PCGS. William Barber's Metric dollar pattern with an obverse that is similar to the one used on the 1877 half union patterns. Liberty wears a coronet with a border of pearls. The reverse shows a partial wreath of cotton and corn tied at the base, a ribbon, and inscriptions that include DEO EST GLORIA and the elemental composition of goloid. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. Several hundred of these pieces are known. The reverse states goloid composition, but to our knowledge none have ever undergone elemental analysis and it is just assumed these pieces were struck from coin silver. As frequently as these silver pieces are seen, others are known in copper and aluminum but are much scarcer. Then there are two "fancy" pieces, one in white metal and one in lead, both are unique. This example shows slight evidence of high point friction. Each side retains significant silver-gray with accents of dark-gray / russet around the outer devices on the obverse and throughout the reverse.
