Patterns
1879 $1 Goloid Metric Dollar, Judd-1626, Pollock-1822, R.4, PR64 NGC. The William Barber Goloid Metric dollar designs pairs a capped Liberty Head with a reverse carrying the statutory as well as elemental inscriptions. A circle of stars about the central text breaks the otherwise continuous wording. Purportedly struck in goloid (a silver alloy that includes a small portion of gold) with a reeded edge. These were issued in three-piece sets that also included the 1879 Flowing Hair stella in gold (Judd-1635) and the 1879 silver Metric dollar design (Judd-1617), which had an obverse similar to that used on the famous fifty dollar (half union) gold patterns of 1877 (Judd-1546). Light golden-rose toning is seen over each side with strong mirrored reflectivity in the fields with no obvious problems other than a few light hairlines.
