1884 5C Five Cents, Judd-1724, Pollock-1934, Low R.6, PR64 PCGS. The Eastman Johnson "holey five cent" design. The obverse shows FIVE above and CENTS below an octagonal opening, undoubtedly handcut, with shields on either side. The reverse shows UNITED STATES OF AMERICA at the outer rim, with an inner circle of 13 stars and date 1884 below. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. Like the nickel cents of the same design, these pieces were also struck on thick and thin planchets. This appears to be a thick planchet variant. Examples were also struck in aluminum. Lightly and evenly toned over each side, the patina is not sufficient to subdue the mirrored flash in the fields. A carbon spot is noted by the reverse rim below the C in CENTS.
