Liberty Half Eagles
1840-C $5 XF45 NGC. Variety 2. An immensely popular issue among collectors, the 1840-C is the first half eagle produced with the mintmark on the reverse below the eagle. This is also a rare date, with only 125-150 coins believed extant from a total of 18,956 pieces delivered. In terms of overall rarity among C-mint half eagles, the 1840-C ranks fourth in the series. For a poorly produced Southern half eagle that has seen 15 points of wear, this coin is rather well-detailed. Typical softness of definition, nonetheless, is noted on the obverse hair curls, star centers, and reverse eagle. A few scattered hints of original luster are evident at direct angles, but rich copper-gold color dominates the outward appearance. Somewhat scuffy from circulation with a few moderate blemishes in the fields.
