Liberty Half Eagles
1849 $5 MS61 PCGS. The mintage for the 1849 is high with 133,070 pieces produced. However, it is certainly not a common date as one might believe if only the mintage were used as an indicator of rarity. On this coin, the obverse details are well defined, but the reverse is somewhat soft on the eagle's plumage. The surfaces are a bright yellow-gold with occasional splashes of deeper orange-gold, and they display nearly unbroken luster. A few small marks, especially on the obverse, limit the grade. All in all, quite a decent coin for the grade. Population: 5 in 61, 5 finer (4/17).
Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 2/2006), lot 2888.
