Liberty Half Eagles
1855 $5 MS62 PCGS. Collectors seeking a luminous Mint State No Motto half eagle with original, frosty mint luster need look no further. This yellow-gold 1855 coin displays shimmering, lightly abraded surfaces with unusually strong eye appeal for the grade. The obverse hair curls below BER and the F in FIVE on the reverse show strike softness, but the remainder of each side is boldly rendered. The top of a misplaced 1 plainly protrudes from the dentils beneath the right foot of the primary 1 -- this variety is unlisted in the Cherrypickers' Guide. The 1855 half eagle as a whole is rare in Mint State and underrated as such. Population: 8 in 62, 9 finer (4/17).
