Liberty Eagles
1843-O $10 AU55 NGC. Variety 3. This 1843-O is scarce both in an absolute sense and by condition. Like most New Orleans gold, the issue circulated heavily in the South and attrition was high regardless of the mintage. This attractive brassy-gold example shows remnants of prooflike surface and retains a moderate amount of orange-gold mint luster. Struck from lapped dies, which weakens the eagle's tailfeathers and the reverse lettering, yet the strike is otherwise sharp. Census: 67 in 55 (1 in 55+★), 62 finer (4/17).
