Liberty Eagles
1882 $10 MS64 PCGS. Scarce in Choice Mint State and rare any finer, the 1882 Liberty eagle was struck in plentiful quantity (2.2 million pieces) but remarkably few pieces were domestically preserved in high grades. Most of the mintage sat in European bank hoards, where the coins were counted and recounted over several decades. The present near-Gem example is lustrous and frosty with a few tiny marks. The strike is above-average for the issue, with nominal weakness at the back-of-neck curls. Just two examples are graded numerically finer at both services combined. PCGS population: 50 in 64 (2 in 64+), 1 finer (4/17).
