Antoninus Pius. As Caesar, AD 138. Æ Sestertius (33mm, 24.71 g, 12h). Rome mint. Struck under Hadrian, February-July AD 138. Bare head right / Pietas standing left, extending both arms over two small togate figures standing to either side of her. RIC II 1085 (Hadrian) var. (PIETAS across field); Banti 275. VF, brown-green surfaces, a few minor rough spots on the reverse, some light cleaning marks. Rare, this coin is the only example in CoinArchives.

After the sudden death of Aelius Caesar on 1 January AD 138, Hadrian was left without a successor. T. Aurelius Fulvus Boionius Antoninus, an individual from a distinguished family and with a competent, if not particularly noteworthy career, became Hadrian's new heir. Before Hadrian's own death seven months later, Antoninus was virtual emperor; thus, the transition of government easily passed into his reign.
