Judaea, Herodian Kingdom. Herod I. Æ 8 Prutot (9.34 g), 40 BCE-4 CE. Uncertain mint in Samaria, RY 3 (40/39 or 38/7 BCE). Helmet with cheek guards surmounted by star; above to either side, palm branch. Reverse: BAΣIΛEΩΣ HPΩΔOY, tripod lebes; in left field, date (L Γ); in right field, monogram. Cf. Hendin 1169 (form of P in HPΩΔOY); cf. TJC 44 (same). Earthen-brown patina. Very Fine. Estimate Value $300 - 350
From the Dr. Patrick Tan Collection.
The form of the P in HPΩΔOY takes on an unusual form on this coin, with a short bar at the bottom. The bar does not appear to be a die-break, although this is not certain.
