Great Britain. Pattern Half Penny, Undated. Peck-724 (Rare). Anne, 1702-1714. Obverse, draped bare-headed bust of Queen left, ANNA DG MAG BR FR ET HIB REG. Reverse; Britannia seated with shield, holding spear, exergue plain. A bronzed proof, exceptionally well detailed. Normally encountered in lower grades, this is a superior piece. Slight evidence of die rust on reverse as is normal. Struck on a 28mm diameter flan with plain lightly striated edge. Great eye appeal. PCGS graded MS-64 Brown. WINGS. Estimate Value $1,000 - 1,200
*Peck comments that the portrait on these patterns is in low relief, resembling that on the silver coins. He maintains that it is probable that the 2 pattern halfpennies here offered were struck during the last year of Anne's reign or perhaps soon after her death in 1714. Peck describes the rust marks as being so slight and superficial 'that they detract very little from the fine overall appearance of the reverses.' There were no currency halfpenny coins produced for Queen Anne, and her sudden death in 1714 was probably the reason that these rare patterns remain the largest copper coins bearing her portrait.
