Great Britain. Crown, 1741. S.3687; ESC-123; Dav-1348; KM-575.2. George II. Obverse; Laureate armored bust of king (with lion mask on tunic at shoulder) engraved by Croker. GEORGIUS II DEI GRATIA. Reverse; Crowned cruciform shields with roses in the four angles. Edge reads DECVS ET TVTAMEN ANNO REGNI DECIMO QVARTO in raised letters. A practically flawless specimen which exhibits no sign of wear. Mint state and beautifully struck, especially on the king's eye (a notoriously weak area) with deep rainbow toning and full underlying iridescent luster. Irreplaceable on today's market. NGC graded MS-63. WINGS. Estimate Value $8,000 - 9,000
George II ruled Britain from the end of May 1727 to October 1760. The son of George I and the grandfather of George III he died at Kensington Palace, London, on 25 October 1760 aged 76, and was buried at Westminster Abbey.
Silver coins were minted only spasmodically throughout the reign. Crowns are quite scarce. They were the largest silver coins and were only produced in ten years. All Crowns and Halfcrowns of this reign are rare in mint condition.
George declared war on Spain in 1739, and he was the last king to have personally led his troops, at the Battle of Dettingen on 17 June 1743.
