GAUL, GOLD STATER OF THE CARNUTES, 2nd-1st century BC, 7.348g, 3h. DT 2525. Lightly toned with underlying luster. Struck in high relief. Despite a usual short flan, a pleasing and well-centered example. Choice extremely fine
The Carnutes, a powerful Celtic tribe, dwelt in an extensive territory between the Sequana (Seine) and the Liger (Loire) rivers. Their territory had the reputation of being the political and religious center of the Gaul. Livy history records the legendary tradition that the Carnutes had been one of the tribes that accompanied Bellovesus in his invasion of Italy during the reign of Tarquinius Priscus.
