GAUL, GOLD QUARTER STATER OF THE VENETI, 2nd-1st century BC, 1.957g, 12h. DT 2134. Rare. Old cabinet tone. Perfectly centered and struck on a full flan. With a wonderful representation of Ogmios. Superb extremely fine. Hess-Divo 2016 (330) lot 23

Ogmios was the Celtic deity of eloquence. He is described by Lucian, a satirical author of the 2nd century, with long chains running from his tongue to the ears of his disciples. The chains, made out of amber and gold, represent him using his powers of persuasion and eloquence to bind his listeners to his every word. This shows that Ogmios has the power to change and influence men's minds so that they want to follow him to the ends of the earth.
