EMPIRE, GOLD AUREUS OF TRAJAN, Rome, ca. AD 112, 7.003g, 7h. Calicó 1137a. Extremely rare. Lightly toned with underlying luster. With two attractive portraits well-centered. In unusual good condition for this difficult and fascinating issue. Choice very fine
From AD 112-115, a number of issues for Trajan's relatives were struck, particularly for his wife, sister and niece. Trajan also struck reverse types commemorating the deification of his father, Marcus Ulpius Traianus. Ulpius Traianus was the first senatorial member of his family, and rose to military distinction under Nero and Vespasian. He commanded the tenth legion during the Jewish War and laid siege to Joppa. During this time he came into favour with the future emperor. Trajan's forum featured a temple to the emperor's deified father, located behind Trajan's monumental column.
