A member of the Severan dynasty, Caracalla - popular nickname which referred to the Gallic hooded tunic he habitually wore - was the eldest son of Septimius Severus and Julia Domna. Reigning jointly with his father, he then ruled jointly with his younger brother, Geta. Caracalla is often presented in ancient sources as a tyrant and cruel leader, an image that has survived into modernity.
