EMPIRE, GOLD AUREUS OF CARACALLA, Rome, ca. AD 199, 7.423g, 12h. Calicó 2818. Very rare. Lightly toned with underlying luster. An exquisite portrait of excellent style struck in high relief. Choice extremely fine. Leu Numismatik 2002 (83) lot 791

A member of the Severan dynasty, Caracalla - popular nickname which referred to the Gallic hooded tunic he habitually wore - was the eldest son of Septimius Severus and Julia Domna. Reigning jointly with his father, he then ruled jointly with his younger brother, Geta. Caracalla is often presented in ancient sources as a tyrant and cruel leader, an image that has survived into modernity.
