EMPIRE, SILVER DENARIUS OF TRANQUILLINA, Rome, ca. AD 241, 2.564g, 6h. RIC 252. Very rare. Attractively toned. Perfectly centered and struck on a broad flan. Choice extremely fine. Numismatica Ars Classica 2012 (64) lot 1246; Rauch 2004 (73) lot 833
Young daughter of Timesitheus, whom Gordian III made commander of his Praetorian guards, Tranquillina was an empress and the wife of Gordian III. Historians are inclined to believe that marriage, though born to political interests, it was still a union of hearts and the confirmation it would be the representation of the many coins struck in a short period.
