EMPIRE, SILVER MEDALLION OF CONSTANTINE I, Sirmium, ca. AD 320, 3.948g, 12h. RIC 14. Rare. Old cabinet tone. Surfaces somewhat porous. Appealing portraits. Good very fine. Privately acquired from Tradart; Bankhaus Aufhäuser 1990 (7) lot 778
This rare dynastic type depicts Constantine's two elder sons, Crispus and Constantine II. The head of Crispus, who was aged about 21 at the time of the issue, is depicted larger and more mature than that of his half-brother who was only 8. Sometimes described as a 'medallion' or a 'multiple', this base silver coin is of an experimental denomination, which preceded the reintroduction of pure silver coinage about AD 325.
