ca. 19th Century AD. An unusually large example of a French navaja a traditional Spanish folding blade. The first navajas originated in southern Spain and were later manufactured in other countries particularly France. The later development of the backspring and locking mechanisms added to the knife's popularity. Practical use of the navaja began to decline around the 19th century but was still held as a cherished custom and remained part of the personal costume for years. The unique look and cultural symbol was highly attractive to foreign visitors and the blades soon became a must-have collectible and souvenir in Spain. Our piece is finely crafted with iron blade and handle of etched bone with figural and floral design alternating with mother-of-pearl inlays. The size indicates perhaps this piece was a display item used to showcase the knife-maker's fine skill. Handle L. 23" (58 cm).
