ca. 11th Century AD. A very rare example of Haripunchai sandstone adorned Buddha head. The Haripunchai belonged to the Mon-Dvaravati Khmer people who were the inhabitants of Thailand before the Thais migrated. The Haripunchai had a kingdom in Thailand which peaked around the 11th/12th century at the time when the Khmer controlled much of Southern and Central Tailand during the Lopburi Period. In many respects their art closely resembles Khmer art. The present piece represents the adorned Buddha. It has very strong Mon/Khmer features namely the squarish face and rectangular lips. Haripunchai pieces are usually found in terracotta or stucco making this sandstone example a rarity. H. 10 3/4" (27 cm) with base 14".
