Meiji Period ca. late 19th Century AD. This is a superb example of Japanese metalwork where the ancient tradition of craftsmanship formerly employed in swordmaking was turned to the newly developing export market during the Meiji Period. The piece depicts an exquisite landscape scene rendered in gold and silver on the lid with gold floral design on the sides. The piece is in excellent condition and somewhat large for a piece of Komei. L. 6" H. 1 3/4" D. 4" (15 cm x 4.5 cm x 10 cm).
