Although the Theatre Royal, Haymarket, dates to 1720, it was not until 1767 that it acquired royal patronage by a patent granted to Samuel Foote. Foote sold his rights to George Colman (†1794) in 1777 and the theatre remained active in its original form until 1820 under firstly, George Colman Jr, and then his brother-in-law, David Morris. The theatre was rebuilt by Nash and has remained open since that time
