Kwangtung. Kuang-hsü Specimen Dollar ND (1890-1908) SP64 NGC, Guangzhou (Canton) mint, KM-Y203, L&M-133, Kann-26. This issue began a major change in the design of the "Dragon" Dollar. Previously, the English legends appeared on the obverse of the coins. This policy met with opposition, both in the general public and also among the minting authorities. This Kwangtung issue was the first issue to reverse the English legend from the obverse (legend side) to the reverse (dragon side.) A small number of presentation Specimens (or Proofs) were struck, and later the type was struck in large quantities for general circulation. This Choice example is sharply struck, with only a few tiny marks. The fields are mirrored, and reflective, and a hint of golden patina enhances the near-Gem appearance. Only two pieces have been certified finer by NGC.
