China
Republic Tuan Chi-jui gold Specimen Dollar ND (1924) SP55 PCGS, L&M-1097, Kann-1577, KM-Pn73. An incredibly pleasing example of this highly coveted off-metal issue in gold, struck to commemorate the "peaceful unification" of China. Likely ending up in the possession of a government official or a member of the elite social class, this example shows light handling as the assigned PCGS grade suggests, but its charm remains undiminished. Expertly produced, the detail in the design is impressively crisp and the fields possess evident mirror-like flash. The edges are also notable and on both sides, as they rise above the central design, creating a wire-like rim. Attractive yellow tone can be seen over much of the fields, deepening around portions of the raised surfaces, and confirming absolute originality. Elusive in any grade, there is little doubt that this lovely example will find a happy home in the next collection it enters.
