Hsu Shih-chang (Xu Shichang) Presidential Inaugural Enameled silver Badge 1918, The center of the badge has a silver image of Hsu Shih-chang, surrounded by a blue-enameled ring with Chinese text. A larger floral metallic ring, with some areas of blue and green enameling, surrounds both the central image and blue enameled ring. All of these are surrounded by enameled rays in colors of red, yellow, white, green, black, and blue. The reverse has a clasp, with a small stamp containing Chinese characters. Included is a case that fits the badge perfectly, but we do not know if this is the original case
Xu was Premier of the Republic of China (a position equivalent to Secretary of State) from 1914-1916. He was elected President in 1918. As a civilian, he had a very difficult task to balance relations with the various military factions, while performing his Presidential duties. He managed to accomplish this feat until 1922 when he was pressured out of office by the Zhili leader Cao Kun.
