People's Republic gold 2-Piece "Japanese-Sino Friendship" Matte Medal Set 1972, The first set we have seen of its kind, featuring Chairman Mao on one (59.93g) and Japan's Prime Minister Kakuei Tanaka and the PRC's Premier Zhou Enlai over Tiananmen (60.27g) on the other. Both share similar reverses, depicting the countries' flags above the Great Wall of China and several stamps, including a "1000" inside a circle to mark the fineness near the bottom of the design. Produced with a matte finish, the characters contrast throughout and result in a modern design composition. Several light contact marks appear in the fields and a slightly larger one appears near the reverse rim at 12 o'clock on the Tanaka and Enlai piece. Accompanied by the original box of issue and COA. Undoubtedly very rare.
