French Colony copper Specimen Pattern Sapeque 1870 SP63 Red and Brown PCGS, KM-Unl, Lec-1a. By D. Ulhorn. A rare pattern issue, through to exist in numbers below 20, and presumed to have been created for an exhibition. Close observation of previous sales of the type suggests that survivors come from two sets of dies, this die showing a fairly significant crack running through the C in ECHANTILLON, while the other die shows a small crack extending from the base of the E in ECHANTILLON. Emissions from this die seem to appear slightly less frequently.
