MACEDON. Skione. Circa 400-350 BC. Tetrobol (Silver, 13 mm, 1.82 g, 9 h), Phoenician standard. Youthful male head to right, wearing tainia. Rev. ΣKIΩ-NAIΩN Corinthian helmet to right; all within shallow round incuse. AMNG III, -. SNG ANS 713. Minor cleaning marks, otherwise, very fine.


From a German collection, assembled since the 1960s.

This issue is usually attributed to the time of the Athenian siege of Skione in 423-421, but the style and fabric of the coin plus the extended ethnic point towards a later date, corresponding to the Skione bronzes of the early 4th Century.
