MACEDON. Edessa. Caracalla, 198-217. Triassarion (Copper, 27 mm, 11.86 g, 1 h). MAP AY AYT ANTΩNINOC Laurate, draped and cuirassed bust of Caracalla to the right. Rev. ЄΔЄCC/Є-Ω-N Helmeted Roma seated left on cuirass, holding Nike in right hand hand and sword sheath with left; behind, city-Goddess (?) standing left, holding scepter and cornucopia in left hand and wreath in right; to left, forepart of goat left. SNG ANS -. Varbanov 3623 var. (legends). Rare and with and attractive patina. Very fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

The frequent appearance of goats on the coinage of Edessa might be an argument to locate the old Macedonian capital of Agai in Edessa rather than Vergina.
