On this "Double Louis aux 8L", Louis XIV portrays all his pride and his gaze goes towards the distant horizons, symbolizing the surety with which he holds the helm of the Kingdom of France, during this most brilliant period of its history and the distance at which he retains its enemies. This laurel wreathed portrait with the long wig, personifies the very image of the absolute sovereign, which Louis XIV endeavors to create and to incarnate.
But what this coin does not say, is that in 1714, feeling the end approaching, the "Sun King", is a star now setting in a blood-red sky, orbiting worriedly around himself. He is alone. All his potential successors are dead, cut down by epidemics. The only remaining inheritor is a great-grandson, the future Louis XV, or bastards, to whom the royal law forbids to wear the crown... Not to forget, a France deserted by Huguenots who he had mercilessly persecuted and the peasants, he had burdened with taxes.
Sur ce multiple Louis aux huit « L », Louis XIV conserve toute sa fierté et son regard porté sur les lointains horizons. Son portrait symbolise bien la fermeté avec laquelle il tient la barre du Royaume de France au cours de la période la plus brillante de son histoire et la distance à laquelle il repousse ses ennemis. C'est le portrait lauré à la grande perruque, l'image même du souverain absolu, que Louis XIV s'efforce de créer et d'incarner.
Mais ce que la monnaie ne dit pas, c'est qu'en 1714, sentant la fin approcher, le « roi Soleil », astre désormais couchant dans un rouge sang, se tourne inquiet. Autour de lui, c'est le désert. Tous ses successeurs potentiels sont morts, fauchés par les épidémies. Ne reste qu'un arrière-petit-fils, le futur Louis XV, ou alors, des bâtards, auxquels la loi royale interdit la couronne... Sans oublier une France exsangue des huguenots qu'il a impitoyablement persécutés et des paysans qu'il a pressurés d'impôts.
