Rhodes was an economic powerhouse deeply involved in the eastern Mediterranean shipping trade. So important was the city that when Alexander the Great undertook his campaign against the Persian empire he deposited his will with the Rhodians. This event took place while didrachms in this series were struck. The reverse type of the didrachm is a punning symbol of the city. The Greek word for rose is rhodos.
