Brazil. Grand Masonic Lodge - Law of Free Birth ("Abolition of Slavery") Medal, 1871. Silver. 71mm. By Ernesto and Carneiro. Bust right of the Viscount of Rio Branco, Grand Master of the Masonic Lodge of Lauridio, between Masonic emblems, rev. Brasilia holding law inscribed 1871 before jubilant children and their slave mothers, Amazon Indian standing facing. A stalwart anti-slavery champion, President of the Council of Ministers, José Maria da Silva Paranhos, Viscount of Rio Branco (1819-1880) was greatly instrumental in the abolition of slavery in Brazil. After working tirelessly, Paranhos saw his bill to grant freedom to all children born of slave mothers passed September 27, 1871. After the Viscount's death, the last vestiges of slavery would be stamped out by Princess Isabel in 1888. Meili 49, Fonrobert 8750. Very rare. Small flurry of pinscratches right obverse field. Toned.
