Bust right of the Viscount of Rio Branco, Grand Master of the Masonic Lodge of Lauridio, between Masonic emblems, rev. Brasilia holding law inscribed 1871 before jubilant children and their slave mothers, Amazon Indian standing facing. José Maria da Silva Paranhos, Viscount of Rio Branco (1819-1880), championed the abolition of slavery in Brazil. President of the Council of Ministers, Paranhos saw his bill to grant freedom to all children born of slave mothers pass September 27, 1871.
