World's Columbian Exposition, 1892-1893. Official Medal for Exhibitors. Bronze Copper. 76.7mm. By Augustus St. Gaudens (obverse) and Charles Barber. Columbus striding into the New World, rev. Two winged maidens, one sounding clarion, the other inscribing globe atop legend on tablet, ship below, torch either side. Presented to JORJE J. ROHDE. This is one of America's most controversial medals as St. Gaudens' obverse was highly praised, while mint engraver Barber's workmanlike reverse which replaced St. Gaudens design was widely decried, and Barber was cast as an interloper in the greater artist's work. Attractive patina. Choice Uncirculated, a lovely example.

Estimate: $200.00 - $250.00
