Britain, Gallo-Belgic imports. Ambiani. 58-55 B.C. AV stater (18 mm, 6.21 g). Gallic War Uniface type. Plain, as made / Sinuous horse right; below, pellet; in exergue, zig-zag. ABC 16; Van Arsdell 52; SCBC 11. Good very fine.

From the KJG Collection of British Celtic Coins. Ex Berk 75 (28 January 1993), 10.

The first coins in Britain were imported from across the Channel, from northwestern Gaul, beginning in about the third century B.C. and lasting for around a century and a half. The reasons why these coins were imported is not fully understood at this time, but illustrates the close political and social interactions between the Celtic peoples in Britain and on the continent.
