From the KJG Collection of British Celtic Coins. Ex Rudd 124 (July 2012), 48.
Tasciovanus was one of the greatest kings of Iron Age Britain, only overshadowed by his son, Cunobelinus. His grave, if it is indeed his and not the grave of another important royal, at Lexden, Colchester, contained a medallion of Augustus, often a diplomatic gift bestowed by the emperor of Rome himself. This suggests he likely had close ties with the Roman Empire.
This coin is interesting as it has the mint name between the rays of the star on the obverse. VARLAMIO is Verulamium, or St. Albans close to London. St. Albans was the first major town on the old Roman road of Watling Street for travellers heading north.
