Twenty Cent Pieces
1876 20C MS67 PCGS. CAC. Authorized in March 1875, the unfortunate twenty cent piece soon proved unpopular and unnecessary, largely due to its similarity in size and design to the quarter dollar which created significant confusion in daily commerce. As a result, business strike twenty cent pieces were minted for only two years, but production occurred in three different mints. San Francisco made the largest contribution, striking more than 1.1 million pieces and by default creating the only truly available date in the series. The Philadelphia and Carson City emissions for 1875 and 1876 were minimal in comparison to that of the California facility, and all are either scarce or rare in Mint State today. Proof-only mintages were issued in 1877 and 1878 at Philadelphia, and the denomination was discontinued completely on May 2, 1878. Twenty cent pieces were heavily melted in later years, and the 1876, with a small mintage of only 14,400 coins, has proven to be a challenging semikey in all grades, and is especially sought-after in Gem and finer condition. At the MS67 level, PCGS has graded only three representatives (1 in 67+) with none finer (6/17). The present coin is a stunning example, with brilliant fields and virtually perfect surfaces that showcase remarkably frosty luster. The striking details are sharp throughout. The intense visual appeal and high technical grade make this example a fitting choice for the finest type set or date collection.
