Bust Quarters
1818/5 25C B-3, R.3, MS64 PCGS. Tompkins Die State 3/2. The late die state with a light crack from the upper leaf tip to the U in UNITED. In writing Early Quarters of the United States, Steve Tompkins explains that the influx of Spanish two reales slowed despite increasing demand for quarter-size coins, necessitating a large production of federal quarters in 1818. A total of 361,174 pieces were struck using five obverse dies and seven reverse dies, and 10 die marriages are known for the issue. B-3 and B-1 share the same obverse die, but evidence of the underdigit 5 is more apparent on B-1. Forest-green borders surround stone-gray interiors. This well-struck representative displays coruscating luster and minimally abraded fields. Liberty's cheekbone shows a few minuscule ticks. B-3 Population: 1 in 64, 1 finer (5/17).
