Standing Liberty Quarters
1916 25C MS62 Full Head PCGS. In November 1916, the Treasury Department placed orders for four million quarter dollars, the production of which needed to commence before the end of the year. Had the Mint completed the Standing Liberty design for this denomination on schedule, the first-year issue of the new series would be a common coin today. However, coinage of Hermon MacNeil's design was not yet possible. The huge quarter dollar order was given to the Denver Mint, which had only Barber quarter dies on hand. Production of the Standing Liberty quarter in 1916 did not commence until December, and then only at the Philadelphia Mint where die manufacturing took place. Just 52,000 pieces were struck before the end of the year.
This low-end Mint State coin shows Full Head detail and luminous golden-toned mint luster. Minor slide marks over the high points of the devices are all that limit the grade. Eye appeal is pleasing.
