Seated Half Dollars
1859-S 50C Medium S, WB-102, Die Pair 6, R.3, MS65 PCGS. A full strike covers both sides of this frosty, lightly toned San Francisco issue. Liberty's hair strands are sharp, as are all 13 star centers -- a situation we do not see often for this S-Mint date or die variety. Light golden-gray toning shows a few patchy-tan accents, with bold cartwheel luster adding to the overall eye appeal. The mintage was 556,000 pieces, yet few were saved numismatically and most of the issue succumbed to attrition.
Gem examples are particularly rare. To date, PCGS and NGC combined report only a dozen or so pieces, with some possible duplications. Bill Bugert's comment is well-taken: "These halves are not routinely seen on the market and collecting all of the die marriages will be challenging." Eight varieties are known, but only two die pairs utilize the Medium S mintmark. Population (all varieties): 4 in 65, 3 finer (5/17).
